I’m not a big fan of Halloween.
I get startled so easily and I experience severe distress by being frightened, even in jest. So, I guess you could say that this spooky holiday isn’t exactly my cup of pumpkin spice latte.
I used to be vehemently anti-Halloween, but I’ve since found that there are actually parts of it that I can appreciate.
I will never enjoy the really scary stuff, however I believe there are elements of Halloween that don’t necessarily have to be about jump-scares or gore.
As such, and with Halloween just a few days away, I have put together a bit of a toolkit for a Wholesome Halloween – activities and aesthetic ideas that cater to those of us who are a bit more on the sensitive side.
Where I suggest products, I’ve tried to make sure that whilst related to Halloween, they would be usable all year round – in other words, you wouldn’t buy them and then only get to use them for the couple of weeks surrounding Halloween. We’re about multi-functionality in this house!

First thing’s first: we’ve got to set the scene.
If you have a fireplace, crackling flames create the perfect Wholesome Halloween atmosphere. You can also find fireplace videos on YouTube that create that warm, cosy background noise if you don’t have a real fireplace.
Drinks and snacks are a must-have for a Wholesome Halloween.
Treats like toffee-apples, ghost-shaped cookies, or warm apple pie are just some of the yummy options out there.
As for drinks, herbal teas or hot chocolate (with added spooky marshmallows!) have that cosy seasonal vibe that we’re seeking. If you want to go the whole hog, this cauldron mug really brings it all together.
To add even more cosiness, making ourselves comfortable is going to play a huge role.
Now it’s time for the fun stuff. With trick-or-treating and Halloween parties out of the question this year, we’re going to have to get creative with our choices of entertainment.
The most obvious one is a spooky film. Sticking with our wholesome theme, there are loads of non-scary options, including (but not limited to):
- The Addams Family
- Edward Scissorhands
- The Rocky Horror Picture Show
- Hocus Pocus
If you’re more of a bookworm, some options include:
- The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
- My Crowd by Charles Addams
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
These books still fall into the spooky and/or Gothic genres, but without the extreme scare-factor.
So there it is – my Wholesome Halloween Toolkit! I hope you find it useful.
Feel free to follow it, adapt it to suit your needs, or ignore it completely – make this Halloween whatever you want it to be.
As for me, I’ll be keeping this Halloween as Wholesome as I can… and looking forward to more autumnal vibes in November!
