I believe that using the Law of Attraction in our daily lives can improve our mental health.
Now before there is any misunderstanding, I want to make this clear: I am not saying that the Law of Attraction can cure mental illness. I am saying that the Law of Attraction can improve mental health.
Mental Illness = A clinically diagnosable illness affecting how a person thinks and feels, behaves and interacts with other people and this can range from anxiety or depression, to eating disorders, bipolar or schizophrenia. These illnesses are a result of biological, developmental and/or social factors and can be managed with cognitive and behavioural psychological therapies, psychosocial support and medically in the same manner as a physical disease would be treated.
Mental Health/Wellness = A broad term referring to the social, psychological and emotional wellbeing of individuals. Maintaining good mental health is an important part of leading a productive and fruitful life and many of us take steps to ensure we have good mental health by doing things, such as surrounding ourselves with caring friends and family, doing hobbies we enjoy, eating and sleeping well, exercising, working in a field we are passionate about and so on.
Okay, so now we’ve cleared that up, let’s start with the basics: What is the Law of Attraction?
I’m not going to go into a huge explanation of the Law of Attraction, but if you want to learn more about it and how it works, I’ve left a list of resources at the end of this post.
To put it simply, TheLawOfAttraction.com sums it up as:
… the ability to attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on.
Much of the Law of Attraction material produced focuses on how it can help us become wealthy and successful, but I think it has wider benefits including mental health.
Reframing negative thoughts into positive language
No matter how persistently optimistic we try to be, negative thoughts are just a natural part of being human. They happen, whether we intend them to or not. We have no choice in that. However, we do have a choice about how we move forward from the thought.
The Law of Attraction states that like attracts like; negativity attracts negativity, positivity attracts positivity. So if we have a negative thought, such as “I am unloved”, we have two options: we can a) accept the negative thought and allow it to make us feel like shit, or b) challenge the negative thought by reframing it into positive language, such as “I am loved”. If we choose option b), I’m not going to lie, to start with it feels fake. I mean, you feel the exact opposite, so why would you say otherwise?
Well, there’s a good reason why, and that is that if you tell yourself that you are loved, you will start to feel it. You will recognise the people who genuinely do love and care about you. You will be more aware of acts of kindness and affection that are easy to miss if your mindset is “I am unloved”.
Dwelling or focusing on the feeling of being unloved can be really detrimental to our mental health, as can the scores of other negative thoughts we can have in a day. If we make the active decision to flip every negative thought into a positive, we are putting positivity out into the universe, and the Law of Attraction has no choice but to send positivity back. If we believe we are loved, we will feel loved.
Like attracts like.
As for the sceptical…
Sure, some suggest that the Law of Attraction is just a bunch of new-age pseudoscience, but I can only share what I’ve found helpful. Maybe it’s not the solution to all of life’s problems, but it’s had a significant positive effect on my mindset and my mental health. I just hope you will give it a try.
