I recently guest-posted on diffusingthetension.com, in their segment called Meet the Blogger.
It made me realise that I haven’t really opened up much about myself on this blog, so I thought I would post my piece on here as well! Questions asked by Jen at diffusingthetension.com.
First of all, tell me a little about yourself.
My name is Hazel. I am 30 years old and I live in Derbyshire, England. I have Borderline Personality Disorder, depression, and anxiety.
What is your connection to the blogging and/or mental health community?
In terms of blogging, I created and run the blog thepatchworkfox.com. I was inspired to start blogging about mental health, mental illness, and recovery due to my connection to the mental health community on Twitter. Living with mental illness(es) can be incredibly isolating, but I have found that the mental health community is a wonderful, thriving community, full of people who just want to support each other and share their stories.
What is the hardest part about having a successful blog?
Maintaining momentum. I think this is an issue for any blogger, but particularly bloggers with mental illnesses/chronic illnesses. It’s easy to sink into a slump of not posting regularly when we’re not feeling well, and it can be difficult to get restarted again after a slump.
What is the biggest challenge the mental health community faces currently?
I would say trolls. It’s an incredibly brave thing to do, to make yourself vulnerable by sharing your story online, and the risk of being trolled is very real; the hurt they cause, very real.
What are 5 things that many people do not know about you?
- I am left-handed.
- I can speak German (just about).
- I was a child ballerina.
- I used to be a librarian.
- I’m supposed to wear glasses, but I never do! (Edit: I’ve started wearing them again now!)
What is your favourite book and why?
My favourite book is But Inside I’m Screaming by Elizabeth Flock. I love it because the story resonates with me, and it gives an accurate portrayal of psychiatric hospitalisation.
What do you do when you are having a really hard day to lift your spirits?
I try to spend time with my family and my cats so I’m not isolating myself, and I also try to make contact with my online friends, who are always very supportive.
What makes a person brave?
Feeling the fear and doing it anyway.
What 3 words would you use to describe yourself and why?
I would say: curious (because I love to learn new things), opinionated (speaks for itself), and kind (because I try to spread the love wherever I can).
What is your biggest flaw?
I get too emotionally involved in things and take things very personally. I need to learn how to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
What is your greatest strength?
This is a tough one because I don’t often say nice things about myself! But if I have to choose, I think I’d say my supportive nature.
What is your best childhood memory?
I have lots of lovely childhood memories; we spent a lot of time together as a family and went on some wonderful holidays together.
Where do you envision your blog in 5 years?
I have no idea. Sorry to be vague!
Where do you see the mental health community in 5 years?
I *hope* that it is bigger and thriving; a place where people feel safe and supported.
