When you experience mental illness, every day can feel like a battle.
You can feel like you have no energy, no motivation, and it can make you feel like you’ve done nothing and wasted your day.
As part of my recovery, and with encouragement from my CPN, I’ve started to look at my days differently.
I’m being kinder to myself, and I no longer feel the pressure to do every single thing on this list every day, or that I need to do something “big” in order to congratulate myself. Each day can be tough, so anything I manage to do on top of staying alive is a cause for celebration.
If I manage to do one of the things on this list (below), I count it as an achievement, and reason to be proud of myself.
- got out of bed
- had a shower
- changed pyjamas
- brushed my teeth
- washed my face
- read a few sentences of a book
- ate something
- brushed my hair
There are more but these are just a few examples.
You will notice that this list is largely activities related to self-care and hygiene. This is because when I’m feeling low, the first thing to go out the window is my ability to look after myself, and this has a knock-on effect on my mental health. It’s a vicious cycle. Therefore, I’ve prioritised using what little energy I have on these basic personal care activities, and maybe, in the future, I’ll build up the energy and the motivation to tackle more things on the list, and perhaps even bigger tasks.
