What do I like about myself?
This has always been a tough one for me. Having Borderline Personality Disorder means that I am constantly putting myself down, and my brain is always full of self-criticism and negative self-talk.
Today, as part of my recovery, I’ve decided to actively fight against that and come up with a list of reasons why I like myself. Here goes.
I am a good listener
If someone needs to chat or vent, I’m your person. I think I’m a good listener because I actively listen to people and make them feel truly heard.
I care about others intensely
Part of having BPD means that I feel emotions more intensely than the “average” person, and that’s not always a bad thing. When I care about someone, I care about them with my whole heart, and I think that’s a really good thing.
I have a way with animals
I’ve always loved animals, but I didn’t realise I had a way with them until my parents pointed it out. Whenever I meet a new animal, they seem to instantly become my friend! I don’t know if I give off cool vibes to them, or if I just seem chill, or if they can just tell that I love them so much – either way, they seem to like me.
I am always trying to improve myself and learn more
I consider myself a lifelong learner, and I’m always looking for ways to improve myself and learn more about myself and the world around me.
This might not seem like many reasons, but a year ago, I couldn’t even name one thing that I liked about myself. This exercise felt weird but good.
