My Easy Skincare Routine

Living with mental illness can seriously affect our energy levels and motivation to take care of ourselves.

Often, when we think of skincare, we imagine having to use dozens of expensive products in long, convoluted routines that are just too difficult to maintain and take energy that we just don’t have.

However, I’m sure I’m not alone in being a 29-year-old who still has the skin of a puberty-stricken teenager, so it’s even more important for me to have a skincare routine.

As such, I’ve had to put together a skincare routine that is manageable and sustainable with my energy levels. It takes about two minutes for the entire routine, and I’d like to share it today.

1. Cleanse (30 seconds)

I use Garnier Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Water to clean my face. It’s light and refreshing, it smells gorgeous, and it’s really easy to use. Simply pour a small amount onto a cotton pad and wipe across your face. It’s a great one for feeling reinvigorated really quickly.

2. Tone (30 seconds)

Garnier Skin Active Refreshing Botanical Toner with Aloe Extract is a beautiful toner that smells amazing and it works in combination with the micellar water to remove impurities and rehydrate your skin. Again, simply pour a small amount onto a cotton pad and wipe across your face. It feels so fresh and continues that feeling of reinvigoration.

3. Moisturise (30 seconds)

For moisturising, I use Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturiser. It’s lovely and light (I’m not a fan of heavy, goopy moisturisers), and you don’t need to use too much of it to get a great feeling of rehydration and smooth skin. Put a small amount on your fingers and rub it into your face to replenish your skin.

4. Spot treatment (30 seconds)

As I mentioned, at age 29, I still struggle with spots, particularly around my time of the month, so I occasionally have to use a spot-on treatment. For this, I use Neutrogena Rapid Treatment Gel. Now, I’m not going to lie, this treatment does sting a tiny bit, but boy does it work. It quickly reduces swelling and redness and you only need a tiny amount for great results. Take a small blob of this gel (maybe the size of a grain of rice) and apply directly to a spot. Brace yourself for a little sting, but it goes away really quickly and like I said, it works.

  1. argh. skin care. it’s one of the first things i bail on. that whole “feel badly about yourself so treat yourself badly” thing. i’m trying. i’m a noxema girl myself, and oil of olay moisturizer. works okay when i use it.

    • Honestly, it’s such a lifesaver! A quick wipe over the face and you feel so much more refreshed, without having to use up energy that you don’t have doing a “proper” face wash or shower.
